Evidence of health care disparities among racial and ethnic groups calls for diversification in the student population of the nation’s health career programs. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) recognizes this need and has invested considerable resources in the Office of Health Career Programs to develop programs to promote and to nurture underrepresented students' interest in the health professions and in related academic disciplines offered at UTHSC.
The major goal of this office is to diligently recruit outstanding students from diverse groups that are underrepresented in health career professions; provide them summer enrichment activities that are designed to facilitate matriculation into UTHSC health profession programs; and serve as a resource that provides counseling on matters of concern to underrepresented students as they progress through the health career training process. UTHSC has in place a caring faculty, an outstanding Student Academic Support Services, and very supportive minority student organizations in the various colleges to facilitate smooth transitioning of underrepresented students into the UTHSC environment.
UTHSC actively seeks applications from veterans and individuals who are historically underrepresented in science and in the health care professions. This includes underrepresented minority students, non-traditional students, students with disabilities, and students who represent the first in their families to pursue higher education. Outstanding programs and activities have been designed, coordinated and implemented through the Office of Health Career Programs to guide you in your quest to matriculate into a health profession program.
