Office of Student Affairs:Emgergency Loans

Emergency Student Loans: What all students should know before applying -
The following instructions are provided for students in the College of Medicine only. Students not enrolled in the College of Medicine should contact the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs within his/her college.

  • Emergency loans are available for students through your college’s Admissions and Student Affairs Office.
  • Student Emergency Loans are based on need and availability of funds.
  • Students may borrow up to $600.00. Note: A different amount can be requested, if justified and/or approved by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Emergency loans must be repaid within 30 days after receipt with repayment including interest calculated at six percent per annum.
  • You cannot have more than one outstanding emergency loan. All previous emergency loans must be repaid before another one can be issued.
  • The University is not obligated to send reminder notices before the loan payment is due.
  • New students are not eligible for an emergency loan before the commencement of classes.
  • Graduating students are not eligible for an emergency loan 90 days prior to graduation.

College of Medicine students should follow the steps below when requesting an emergency student loan.

  1. Complete and print the online Emergency Loan Application.
  2. Bring your completed loan application along with your valid UTHSC Student ID to the Office of Student Affairs, 910 Plaza Building Suite 1043, for approval.

    • Students completing rotations in Chattanooga, Knoxville, or other "off-campus" locations, may fax your completed emergency student loan application along with a copy of your valid UTHSC Student ID and return fax number to Pam Henry at 901.448.7085.
    • Once approved by the Office of Student Affairs, the signed emergency student loan application will be faxed to the Bursar's Office for final processing.
      • Checks will be mailed to address indicated on the application.
  3. Take signed/approved emergency student loan application to the Bursar's Office, 62 South Dunlap Suite 103 to receive your requested funds.

"The University of Tennessee, College of Medicine has its roots in Nashville as the Nashville Medical College. That college as organized in 1876, and in 1879 was acquired by the University of Tennessee as its medical department. The Memphis Hospital Medical College was also found in 1876 but, because of the yellow fever epidemic in Memphis, did not actually hold classes until 1880. In 1909 two Nashville schools merged and were operating as the joint Medical department of the University of Nashville and the University of Tennessee. It moved to Memphis in 1911 and merged with the College of Physicians and Surgeons to become the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine... "
