Professional Programs

The BCDD training focuses not only on direct services but also on leadership in advocacy, ethics, reseach, and systems change.

Students from a variety of disciplines and universities come to the BCDD for observation or specific training purposes. Each year approximately 250 students complete training at the Boling Center, 18 to 25 of whom are long-term trainees/fellows.

Physical Therapy

Description

Training experiences are offered throughout the year for entry-level Master’s and Doctoral students in physical therapy. Clinical experiences in physical therapy include programs designed for children with developmental delay. Services are provided to children primarily in early intervention up to age 21.

Physical therapy intervention with children takes place in a variety of unique settings including the home, the Physical Therapy clinic, and at LeBonheur Early Intervention and Development (LEAD) located at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center. This variety of settings allows students to interact and work with different disciplines through an interdisciplinary approach.

Interaction with different disciplines occurs during treatment sessions, team case conference meetings, in-service trainings, and other educational opportunities. Educational opportunities are available through BCDD interdisciplinary Training Series, grand rounds, brown bag lunches, and clinical consultations with different professionals.

Objectives for physical therapy students during their internship include:

  • Administration of testing tools
  • Interpretation of evaluation findings
  • Understanding and identifying impairments, functional limitations and disabilities in children
  • Developing and applying a treatment plan for pediatric clients
  • Understanding treatment approaches used in pediatric physical therapy
  • Understanding roles of physical therapy and other service providers in a multi-team approach
