Professional Programs

The BCDD training focuses not only on direct services but also on leadership in advocacy, ethics, reseach, and systems change.

Students from a variety of disciplines and universities come to the BCDD for observation or specific training purposes. Each year approximately 250 students complete training at the Boling Center, 18 to 25 of whom are long-term trainees/fellows.

Social Work

Description

The social work training program at the BCDD is rooted in the interdisciplinary approach to serving children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.

Training

Aspects of training are basic to professional preparation for social work and include an emphasis on psychosocial factors. Training features

  • understanding of family dynamics and relationships
  • developing skills in the micro system approach
  • utilizing various treatment modalities in working with psychosocial problems of individuals, families, or groups
  • developing competency in macro system intervention skills.

Trainees

The majority of social work trainees are graduate students in the second year of clinical and/or community and management practice training. Some first-year graduate students with high academic standing and qualifying experiences may be considered for training.

Eligibility

A limited number of stipends are available for second-year graduate trainees. Applicants for stipends must be citizens of the United States or non-citizens admitted to the United States as permanent residents, with no other means of financial support. These individuals must be preparing for a career in social work services in the field of developmental disabilities.
