(Board of Dentistry Rules and Regulations)
Application and $500 deposit is due 8 weeks prior to start of course with final payment due 30 days prior to start of course.
COURSE OFFERED: Certification is offered in both restorative and prosthetic functions. These are two separate courses, resulting in two different certifications.
The restorative course consists of 96 hours broken into three weekly sessions at 32 hours per week. Participants will have 3-4 weeks off between sessions. These breaks allow for auxiliaries to decrease the amount of continuous time away from their families and job responsibilities and also provide the opportunity to complete required assignments between sessions.
The prosthetic course consists of 64 hours broken into two weekly sessions at 32 hours per week. Participants will be provided with a 3-4 week break between the two sessions. Participants in each course must attend all session for their respective course.
CERTIFICATION: Upon successful completion of the restorative or prosthetic course, the Tennessee Board of Dentistry will issue the appropriate certification to successful candidates. Once certified in restorative functions, the assistant or hygienist may perform placement of amalgam, composite resin and glass ionomer restorations in teeth previously prepared by a licensed dentist. Upon certification in prosthetic functions, auxiliaries will be allowed to pack retraction cord, obtain final impressions for fixed and removable procedures, as well as fabricate and seat provisional restorations. All of these procedures must be accomplished under the direct supervision and full responsibility of a licensed dentist in the State of Tennessee.
COURSE CONTENT: In order to successfully complete certification, participants will be required to pass written exams covering the lecture material as well as laboratory demonstration of competency in the respective areas.
RESTORATIVE COURSE: Lectures will be presented on the following subjects: morphology, occlusion, dental materials, instrumentation, basic principles of preparation, isolation, selection and placement of matricies, liners and bases, and the insertion and finishing of amalgam, composite resin and glass ionomer restoratives.
