Infectious Diseases of the Oral Cavity Including HIV/AIDS

Friday, November 13, 2009

8:30am - 12:30pm

4 credit hours; $109 per dentist and $89 per auxiliary.  Morning coffee will be provided.

Course Description:

Other than infections of pulpal and periodontal origin, the oral cavity is susceptible to chronic bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Mostly encountered in the young, the elderly or in those with compromised immune systems, these diseases present some degree of a diagnostic challenge in everyday dental care. As a result, their management is suboptimal which increases patient morbidity and without proper care, the hazards of transmission of infection are also elevated. Early recognition of the signs and symptoms and an accurate diagnosis remains the corner stone of patient management. This course will identify the clinical features and suggest diagnostic tests and provide management guidelines on a wide variety of infections including HIV/AIDS affecting the oral cavity and surrounding structures.
