Neurotology and Otology

The Neurotology/Otology rotation is a 4 month subspecialty rotation in the last year of training.  This rotation is directed by Dr. Bruce MacDonald, the UT Neurotologist.

This rotation involves adult and pediatric otology clinic training with Dr. MacDonald managing the full spectrum of disease in this subspecialty.  Surgery is performed primarily at Baptist, LeBonheur Children's, and Methodist-University Hospital.  Cranial base cases are done in cooperation with the Neurosurgery Department.  Audiology experience is provided in Dr. MacDonald's clinics, and at the Hearing and Balance Center at Methodist-University Hospital.

The Department has an active cochlear implant program.  Implant mapping is done for adults at the Hearing and Balance Center at Methodist-University Hospital, and for children at the Memphis Oral School.  Residents are encouraged to participate in mapping the patients they helped implant.  Additionally, residents are required to observe the educational setting at the Memphis Oral School which cares for young children with a goal of early mainstreaming in the community school system.

Several nationally recognized Neurotologists, and Otologists practice in Memphis, are affiliated with the UT Department, and participate in resident surgical and academic education.  These are Dr. John Emmett, Dr. Bruce Fetterman, Dr. Gale Gardner, Dr. Coyle Shea, Dr. John Shea Jr., Dr. John Shea III, and Dr. Paul Shea.

The resident temporal bone dissection course is provided annually, and the Otology residents assist in instruction of their more junior colleagues. Supplemental temporal bone dissection in preparation for the more challenging ear cases is readily available and encouraged.
