Where are all appointments to the postgraduate training program made?
All appointments to the postgraduate training program in General Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, are made through the NRMP (National Residency Match Program).
Where do I submit my information?
All information is to be submitted to the Department of Surgery through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service).
Note: To ensure that all residents meet minimal standards, the Graduate Medical Education Program requires that all residents entering any graduate medical education program sponsored by the University of Tennessee College of Medicine must have passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 (CK and CS) or equivalent examinations (COMLEX-USA or MCCQE). Any agreement of Appointment or offer letter will be contingent upon passing Steps 1 and 2 (or equivalent exams). Each resident is responsible for providing copies of passage of Steps 1 and 2 (CK and CS) or equivalent examinations to the Program Director and GME Office and will not be allowed to start training until the documentation is submitted. A valid ECFMG certificate will be accepted as proof for international medical school graduates.
What are the selection criteria of surgery residents based upon?
The criteria for selection of career surgery residents is based upon:
- Medical school transcripts
- Personal Statement
- Letters of Recommendation
- USMLE Scores Step 1 & 2
- Personal Interviews

What is the process for interviews?
Interviews are required for consideration and invitations will be sent to prospective participants through ERAS. All interview dates are on Wednesdays and should be scheduled well in advance. Residents and applicants meet for dinner on the Tuesday night before each interview date. Hotel information will be sent to scheduled applicants.
On the day of the interview:
- Overview by Program Director
- Tour Memphis
- Surgical Grand Rounds
- Morbidity and Mortality Conference
- Lunch with residents
- Interviews with three faculty members
- Tour Trauma Center
