Opportunities
for Giving
You can make
a gift to The Vascular Biology Center of Excellence (VBCE) as a lasting
investment in the promising future of biomedical research through annual
giving, a gift of appreciated securities, a one-time or planned gift.
Your unrestricted gift can be used by the Center in areas with the greatest
current need, or you may designate a specific area of research or education
in the VBCE (see below) that you wish to support. Named opportunities
are available in the VBCE if you choose to establish an endowment. You
can make your gift through a charitable gift plan, such as a charitable
trust or gift annuity. You also may realize significant tax savings
and, in some cases, increased income through these gift plans.
If you are
interested in learning more about planning a gift to The Vascular Biology
Center of Excellence, please email Peggy
McKnight, M.S., Coordinator of Development, or call (901) 448-4350.
The Center recommends that you consult with your legal and financial
advisors before proceeding with any planned gift.
Gifts
to Specific Areas of Research
Gifts may be made to advance
scientific investigation in specific research areas such as cardiovascular
disease, stroke and cancer. VBCE scientists investigate many of the
most intractable health problems afflicting humankind. Their work offers
fundamental insights into the mechanisms of health and disease, while
opening avenues toward more effective therapies.
Endowing
a Named Professorship
Establishing or contributing
toward an endowed chair for a distinguished professor at the VBCE is
one of the most significant investments a donor can make in scientific
research. The Center's scientists are selected for the breadth of their
knowledge, the intensity of their focus, the ingenuity and effectiveness
of their methods, and the significance of their contribution to the
scientific community. The highest recognition that can be bestowed on
one of these scientists is a professorship, or endowed chair.
Endowing
a Named Fellowship
Endowing a graduate or postdoctoral fellowship allows the VBCE to continue
preparing young investigators for careers in the biomedical and related
sciences. Scientists and physicians who have done postdoctoral study
in the Center will continue on to fill key positions at major research
institutions, medical schools, hospitals, public service organizations
and corporations in our community and around the world.
Endowing
a Named Clinical Fellowship
A gift in support of the Clinical Fellowship Program is an investment
in the careers of young physician-scientists who are dedicated to applying
the new insights of molecular biology to the understanding and treatment
of disease. Clinical Fellows are outstanding young physicians who come
to the UTHSC for medical training that integrates their experience in
clinical practice with cutting-edge laboratory research.
Endowing
a Named Lecturship or Distinguished Lecture Series
A distinguished lecture series creates a powerful catalyst for scientific
exchange and achievement. An endowed lectureship enables world-class
scientists, who give scientific talks, meet with faculty and students,
and interact with people throughout the University and the surrounding
biomedical/scientific community. A lectureship can foster the interdisciplinary
discussion that is often central to discovery. Because visiting lecturers
typically spend time with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows,
endowing a lecture series can have significant impact on the UTSHC's
educational goals.
Other
Named Opportunities
A wide variety of opportunities to make named gifts is available. A
donor interested in providing an assured source of research funding
in a particular research area or focusing on a particular disease or
medical problem, for example, might endow a targeted research fund,
the income from which would underwrite research in the selected area
in perpetuity.
Community
Education/Outreach
Several opportunities exist for funding community education/outreach
in the area of vascular biology. Examples include: education of members
of non-profit organizations, civic groups, assisted-living facilities
regarding risk factors for vascular disease or new research endeavors
that will improve the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases.
